King County Explorers

The program will allow you to see, first hand, whether this is a career you would like to pursue.  By working with the Sheriff’s Office and Deputies, you will discover what a career in law enforcement actually entails.  It is an experience that no book, job description, or TV show can accurately depict.

The explorer post has a rank structure similar to the Sheriff’s Office.  There are academies to attend, and by riding with Deputies on patrol you will experience the exciting, action filled moments of a code response to an in-progress call, as well as the quiet times of early morning when everyone but you seems to be asleep safe in their beds.

Also, through guest speakers and hands-on activities you will have the opportunity to sample specialized units such as TAC-30 (SWAT), Drug Enforcement, K-9, Search and Rescue, Marine Patrol, Bomb Disposal, Traffic, Accident Investigation, and Air Support (Guardian One).

• Ride along with officers on patrol
• Visit the communications where all 911 calls are received and officers and deputies are dispatched from for the entire county.  Here you can listen to incoming calls with the call receivers and work with dispatchers for a shift
• Attend a week-long Explorer Academy with Law Enforcement Explorers from throughout Washington State. 
• Quarry for the K-9 unit during training runs
• Assist detectives conducting investigations
• Fulfill community service requirements for school programs
• Participate in state and regional law enforcement explorer competitions
